In this post I’m going to be revealing how you can make money online blogging in 6 steps!
A BIG question that people are asking, especially these days is ‘How can I make money online from home?’ Well blogging is still one of the most EFFECTIVE ways of doing so.
However, actually being able to monetise your blog and eventually make a full-time passive income from blogging is not as easy as people make it out to be. Which is why I’m sharing these 6 steps on how to make money blogging, to help you get started!
1. Choose your Own Brand
Your brand is what will make your blog and online presence unique. It’s all well and good having a system in place and literally words on a screen. A good way to start doing this is by basing it off what your blog is about, and choosing this is quite simple if you have an idea in your head, or you are passionate about something.
Choosing your Niche/Topic
The best way to figure out what you can blog about is by choosing a topic that you:
- Are passionate about
- Can talk about it in detail
And this doesn’t have to be a home-run straight away. The best way to take action is by trying out what works for you and getting feedback (even from yourself) from it.
For example, I’m a huge football (soccer) fan and that was the first niche I chose to try and write about. However I quickly found out that I didn’t necessarily enjoy blogging about it long-term. But there were plenty of other things that I could blog about while still learning myself because I had an initial interest in it.
So, to recap a good starting point for choosing a topic/niche to blog about is either choosing something that you enjoy writing about, have experience in, or would like to learn more about.
Choose your OWN Domain Name
The domain name is basically what it says on the tin, the name of your domain (website), this is also called the URL. For example my site’s URL is NJEDigitalSuccess.com. Although it is important to spell this right, as long as you’re doing everything else right your name is not as essential as you think as a blogger.
Choosing the right platform & builder
The next step, is choosing the right platform and website builder. And my top recommended platform that can cover your, niche selection, hosting and website building is Wealthy Affiliate. This training platform is geared towards setting you up for long-term online success through creating a profitable blog.
WordPress is the best website builder out there, especially for bloggers looking to create a sustainable, converting brand. It has thousands of themes to choose from and is optimised perfectly for blog posts of all niches. I strongly recommend learning how to use WordPress for your blog and at Wealthy Affiliate they give you step-by-step training on how to build your site with WordPress.
2. Designing your Blog
Next, you need to make your blog look nice and appealing by designing it. This is another very fun part because you have a wealth of tools at your disposal for making it look how you want it to look.
Choose an appropriate theme
First you have to choose a blog theme. Picking the right theme for your blog is extremely important as this will tend to affect how your entire site looks, how it works and what things you can change.
If you choose the wrong theme, you’re going to end up constantly having to try and find new (and usually difficult) ways to try and make certain posts, menus and widgets fit the way you want it to. Whereas if you choose a good theme, building your blog will be a much smoother process and a lot more enjoyable.
The best free WordPress themes at the moment for blogging are OceanWP, Hestia, Astra and Flashblog. These themes are all simple, easily customizable and are all perfectly optimised for mobile devices.
Another extremely useful tool for beautiful blog design is the Elementor plugin. It’s a fantastic drag-and-drop page builder that is ideal for beginners looking to design their blog the way they want to.
Mobile and Tablet device optimisation is essential for a good, converting blog.
Most users as of today have a mobile phone or some sort of portable device. In fact, over 60% of Internet users today will be visiting blogs through their mobile phones.
So you can imagine how important it is that your content is as nice and easy to view on mobile devices as it is on a desktop. You can check this on WordPress in the ‘customise’ tab and in the bottom left corner when you visit your page as an admin.
3. Create USEFUL content
This is the bulk of blogging. Your content is definitely one of the most important aspects of having a good blog. If your goal is to eventually make money from your blog then you’re best bet is creating content that people are looking for.
The Internet is where everyone goes to type in search terms on a problem they need solving, or a product they want to know more information about.
Everyday people type their queries into Google, YouTube, Yahoo, Pinterest, Bing etc. and if your content is solving these queries and getting to the top of these pages then making through your blog is a lot easier than when your content isn’t useful.
How to know what content is useful: Keyword Research & SEO!
You can find out the content that people are looking for through keyword research. There are hundreds of keyword research tools that you can use to find out what terms people are searching for.
My top recommended tool for keyword research is Jaaxy, which is a system that is also fully integrated with Wealthy Affiliate and has all the features you need to see what keywords you need to be targeting for your blog posts.
For example, using Jaaxy, I was able to find out that a lot of people are searching for how to make money online through blogging.
Another underrated free keyword research tool is Pinterest, type your target in the search bar and a list of similar keywords that people are also looking for. Doing this will give a countless topics that you can base your content off.
4. Getting Traffic
Now, it’s time to get readers to your blog. You’ve designed it, made it look nice, written your first few posts, but now it’s time to get people to actually read what you’ve wrote.
There are hundreds of ways to drive traffic to your blog, but I would recommend, if you’re starting off, to stick to ONE traffic source for the time being.
Even with that one traffic source, there are still multiple ways that you can go about utilising it, and few different factors to think about. You need to know who your target demographic is, what competition there is and how your chosen traffic source works.
Best Traffic Sources
Facebook & Instagram are both similar in terms of them both having a very high amount of users, but with that also come higher competition. Facebook Groups in particular can be a good way to connect with other bloggers. Although it may not be the best source for actually driving traffic to your blog, it’s a fantastic way of linking up with other bloggers in your niche and a good way of getting more links to your website.
The difference is with Instagram, you’re going to want to have more of a visual presence. Which is why you’ll want to be in the photography, travel, fashion or art niche.
That being said although it can be more difficult to get people from Instagram to your blog, it’s still possible with good pictures and a good presence.
Google is a traffic source that can get you organic traffic consistently because it’s a search platform. For example, people will always be searching for certain things, and if your blog is ranked and has the answer to those people’s searches, it will appear and new people will visit your blog consistently.
With Google you have the ability to optimise your content, meaning that when people search for things that match your content your blog will be shown continuously. But with that comes the fact that it can take a long time to get ranked on Google, so you need to be prepared to wait until you start to get ranked. But once you do it’s worth it!
Similar to Google, YouTube is great way to get traffic to your blog as it is a search platform and has a massive number of users, more people are searching for videos and not as many people are comfortable being on camera.
So there is a great opportunity to drive traffic to your blog through YouTube. There is also the fact that there will be more trust if you put yourself on camera or people hear your voice, so that’s a great way to build that with your viewers.
5. Building Email/Subscriber List
So, you’re beginning to get some traffic to your blog, the next step to turn some of those viewers into buyers. Most people online will never buy from you or check out what you’re promoting unless you have built a certain level of trust with them and an email list is a great way to do this.
An email list is a valuable asset to have for your blog. Results have shown that people don’t really tend to buy from someone the first time, but after seeing their offer a few times they are more likely to purchase what you’re offering.
This can be summarised in three steps:
#5.1 Lead Magnet: Offer/Guide
Offer to giveaway something in exchange for the person’s email. This could be a small guide or a free eBook.
5.2 Opt-in Form
Then you’ll need to add an opt-in form to your blog so that people can actually put their name and email in. You can do by using an email service provider like ConvertKit, MailChimp, ConstantContact or Aweber.
5.3 Automated Emails
From there, you can create a sequence of automated emails that you send out to your subscriber list, every day, weekly, bi-weekly or monthly (the choice is yours!).
These emails can be more personalised so that your subscribers can get to know you, your story and also can be related to your niche, like useful tips and tricks, success stories or anything that can provide your subscribers with value.
6. Monetise your Blog
So, you’ve got the blog, the great content, the consistent traffic and the subscribers. Now it’s time to start getting the money rolling in. Again, there are multiple ways to start to actually monetise your blog once you’ve got traffic coming in.
Below we’re going to summarise 6 of them.
6.1 Selling Private Ads/ Sponsored Content
These type of ads are where a company pays you to write something about them or their product. To put it simply, your blog is basically like your online property and through sponsored content you’re renting a part of that property to that company.
6.2 CPC/ PPC/Display Ads
CPC stands for Cost per Click, PPM stands for Pay per Click. These are basically display ads that the companies pay you for putting their advert on your blog.
6.3 Becoming your own Brand
The more you become a recognised presence in your niche through your blog, the more people will be reaching out to you. Having an online presence alone is a great way to have opportunities come to you. This could be in the form of partnerships and speaking at events.
6.4 Affiliate Marketing
Affiliate marketing is when you promote other people’s products or services, and earn a small or large commission (depending on the product) if people buy that product through your affiliate links.
Through this method you can earn thousands of dollars passive income per month through your blog. For me, it’s the best way that you can monetise your blog long-term.
Check out a more in-depth tutorial on how to start affiliate marketing here.
6.5 Sell your Own Products
The next technique is selling your own digital or physical products through your blog. However selling digital products is good because you don’t have to worry about overheads like shipping.
Digital products can come in the form of eBooks, online courses and products where there is a recurring membership fee.
6.6 Sell your Blog
And finally, there is selling your established blog. And the great thing is, you’re still able to earn some commissions from the links in that blog is people are still purchasing the product through it!
How can YOU start to monetise your blog?
